Designing for the web is about much more than just nice colors and pretty fonts. It's about creating positive user experiences, communicating information effectively, and guiding people to that information. In ten years of professional experience, I've learned to combine the aesthetics of print with the usability concerns of interactive to craft websites which are equal parts attractive and navigable. I'm also acutely aware of the meteoric growth of mobile, and so I choose to design responsively for every site I create.
Of course, web design isn't just pretty pictures and clean mockups. It's code, straight and true. And I have a lot of experience with code: four years of concentration, as well as bits and pieces over the previous six. I handcode clean, valid HTML5 and CSS (using Sass) which works back to IE7. (Or earlier, if you really need it.) I usually like to start thinking about code the moment the design starts. It's easier that way. I've also picked up enough JavaScript (jQuery) to make some neat things happen too.
Content comes first. Even the prettiest window dressing won't improve an empty window, and before design must come strategy. I start every project with a content review, a visual sitemap, and wireframes coded in live HTML and developed with a mobile-first strategy. With these tools, we'll figure out exactly what your website says, and what it needs to say, before we decide how it will say it.
Frequently I don't have the benefit of a development team at my fingertips. So I learned how to launch websites myself. I generally use WordPress for this due to its extraordinary flexibility. I've worked in a few other systems as well: Drupal, Joomla, and a couple you've probably not heard of. I even write a little straight PHP -- I'm currrently developing a CRUD app using CodeIgniter. Never done that before.
Native app development is a rapidly changing field and often presents special challenges. But mobile apps also offer unique design and usability opportunities. Handheld devices provide access to experiential information and technical functionality beyond the reach of most web browsers, and creative use of this data can lead to interfaces which are a delight for the user. I know how to leverage the experience of interacting with these devices to craft truly excellent native app interfaces.
I'm always happy to hear from you. Let's talk about whatever's on your mind.
